Professor Tian is devoted to computer assisted orthopaedic surgery (CAOS) for over a decade. He is a pioneer and main force in research and clinical application of navigation and robot-assisted surgery in China. He has been using computer assisted orthopaedic surgery since 2002.

Based on clinical practice, Professor Tian proposed the miniaturized, universal design for surgical robot.In association with Beihang University and TINAVImedical company together, proposed robotic surgical biplane positioning methods which based on less DOF parallel structure (2-PPTC). Under his leadership, the team has successfully developed multi-functional orthopaedic surgical robot called “TIAN JI” in year 2016. It has also been entitled as the "Twelve Five" Science and Technology Innovation Exhibition "13 major scientific and technological achievements and important landmark progress".

Professor Tian performed the first medical robot assisted upper cervical spinal surgery as well as the first medical robot assistedodontoid fracture fixation surgery in China. And now the technologies have been applied in many hospitals in different provinces around the country.

Professor Tianalso propagated the Computer Assisted Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery (CAMISS) concept, which accelerated the development of minimally invasive surgery (MIS).

Professor Tian is an outstanding innovator and pioneer in the field of computer assisted orthopaedic surgery.

As the president of the International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS-international) and the former president of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA), Professor Tian has also set up a systematic CAOS training program and an official CAOS training organization in China.

For more than two decades, CAOS-international has been dedicated to the development and clinical application ofpatient specific planning and surgical execution. Professor Tian providing a great link between CAOS-international and China, which will become a unique opportunity for engineers and surgeons, and will certainlypromote the development in this fascinating field.
